Redwoods Rotorua is hands-down one of the best mountain biking destinations on the planet. With over 180km of trails, ranging from beginner loops to gnarly black diamond descents, it’s a playground for every kind of rider. But to really enjoy the forest—and make the most of those legendary flow trails—you’ll want the right bike under you.
Here’s your no-nonsense, local guide to picking the perfect MTB for Redwoods riding.
1. Know the Terrain: It’s All About Flow (and Mud)
Redwoods is famous for its smooth, sculpted flow trails, loamy corners, and rooty singletrack. But it also gets wet—often. That means traction, control, and comfort are key.
Local Tip: Even green trails like Tahi and Creek can feel slick when wet. Meanwhile, trails like Corners, Eagle vs Shark, or Split Enz offer fast, bermy descents that reward a stable, confident bike setup.
2. Full Suspension vs Hardtail?
If you’re only riding the easier stuff or just getting started, a hardtail can be a fun, budget-friendly option. But for anything above grade 2–3, full suspension is your friend. Redwoods is built for it.
Go Hardtail If:
-
You’re sticking to kids' trails or family loops.
-
You want a lightweight, low-maintenance ride.
-
Your budget is under $2,000.
Go Full Suspension If:
-
You’re riding anything blue or harder.
-
You want to ride longer with less fatigue.
-
You like descending fast and in control.
Our Pick: The Specialized Stumpjumper . These trail bikes are built to climb well and descend even better—perfect for Redwoods all-rounders.
3. Wheel Size and Travel: What Works Best?
You’ll see everything from 130mm to 170mm travel in the Whakarewarewa Forest, but here’s a general guide:
-
130–150mm Trail Bikes are ideal for most riders. Enough squish for roots and jumps, but still agile for climbs.
-
160mm+ Enduro Rigs if you’re sending Taniwha National DH, Kung Fu Walrus, or hitting shuttle laps all day.
29” Wheels help smooth out the trail and keep momentum through roots and ruts. 27.5” Wheels are more playful and better for tighter corners if you’re a smaller or more agile rider.
4. Thinking E-MTB? Absolutely.
Want more laps, less shuttle faff, and easier climbs to Frontal Lobotomy? Go electric. Redwoods is e-bike legal and e-bike awesome.
Best Option: The Specialized Turbo Levo or Amflow PL Pro. Modern geometry, long-range batteries, and power delivery that feels natural on techy climbs. Plus, you’ll double your descent time.
5. Don’t Forget the Gear
Your bike is key—but so is the setup. Here’s what else makes your Redwoods ride better:
-
Tubeless tyres with decent tread (Maxxis DHR/DHF or similar)
-
Dropper post for quick descents
-
Spare tube, pump, and multi-tool
-
Riding pack with water, snacks, and a rain layer
