Looking for the perfect way to ride from Papamoa to Mount Maunganui? Whether you’re commuting, cruising, or clocking up training kms, there are some epic bike-friendly options to get you from A to B without battling the main road traffic. Here’s our local guide to the best cycling routes—and a few pro tips from the crew at Mount Bikes.
1. Coast and Pathway Cruise (Beginner-Friendly)
Route: Papamoa East → Papamoa Beach Rd → Girven Rd → Marine Parade → Downtown Mount
Distance: ~12km
Best for: Scenic cruisers, e-bike riders, families
This route hugs the coastline and sticks mostly to shared pathways and quiet streets. Start from Papamoa East and follow the shared pathway down Papamoa Beach Road. Once you hit the end of the path near Girven Road, you can navigate onto the new shared paths leading to Marine Parade. From there, it's a stunning beachside ride straight into the heart of the Mount.
Mount Bikes Tip: Stop for coffee at Tay Street Beach Café or a quick dip before tackling the last section. This is a go-to for e-bike commuters and casual riders.
2. Cycleway & Waterway Trail (Scenic & Peaceful)
Route: Papamoa Plaza → Wairakei Reserve Cycle Trail → Sandhurst Drive → Arataki → Mount
Distance: ~14km
Best for: Gravel path lovers, nature riders, intermediate e-bikers
This lesser-known gem takes you along a gravel cycle path that follows the creek and waterways through Wairakei Reserve. It’s flat, winding, and feels surprisingly remote for a route through the suburbs. From Papamoa Plaza, find the entry to the Wairakei stream-side trail. Wind your way west until you link up with Sandhurst Drive and over to the shared paths leading to Arataki and eventually the Mount.
Mount Bikes Tip: This path can get muddy after rain—great for fat tyres or wider gravel-friendly setups. Perfect for enjoying some nature with less traffic.
